orthodontic treatment south jordan utOrthodontists and dentists believed that it was best to wait and put braces on kids in their early teens. However, doctors have found that children as young as seven may be candidates for early treatments over the years! Orthodontists and dentists today recommend early orthodontic evaluation for children by the age of seven. Our provider of orthodontic treatment in South Jordan, UT, explains some benefits of evaluating your child’s dental health.

Addressing Developmental Problems

Early intervention with braces can correct teeth and jaw developmental problems before they get worse and cause damage. Braces may be a good option if your child has the following symptoms:

  • Underbite, overbite, or crossbite
  • Difficulty chewing, speaking, or eating
  • Protruding teeth (teeth that jut out)
  • Jaws and teeth are out of proportion with the rest of the face
  • Mouth breathing
  • Crowded, widely spaced, or extra teeth

It’s easier to adjust the jaws, teeth, and facial structure in children. The sooner your child gets treatment, the higher the chances of improving their facial growth and orthodontic health.

Allows Teeth to Grow Properly

Early treatments at the age of six or seven can alleviate tooth crowding. The jaw is expanded to make room for new permanent teeth to erupt. Early care can also improve facial symmetry, correct crooked bites, and move the teeth into a proper bite position. Other benefits include:

  • Reduced risk of chipping teeth – if your child has protruding teeth, it is easier to damage, chip, and even break them.
  • Improved speech – if the teeth overlap the bottom teeth too much, it impedes tongue movement and speech. Correcting the bite will also help resolve speech problems.

Further Considerations

If you decide to bring your child in for early evaluation, know that it’s likely our doctor will tell you that your child’s treatment can wait! However, if our doctor determines that early intervention would help them, another benefit is that it will reduce the time for phase 2 treatment and reduce the need for tooth removal at a later stage. Contact our friendly provider today to learn more about early treatment options!

Invisalign Teen in South Jordan UTTooth sensitivity (also referred to as dentin hypersensitivity) is a common dental problem that causes pain – cold beverages, hot foods, and sweet treats can all trigger it. Sensitivity may be caused by common conditions, such as worn tooth enamel, but it can also be a sign of something more serious. Thankfully, you can treat and even prevent tooth sensitivity! Our expert for Invisalign® Teen in South Jordan, UT, explains more below.

What Causes Sensitivity?

There are many causes of tooth sensitivity and its resulting pain. While your case may be caused by something like thin tooth enamel, there’s a chance that it’s caused by a condition that’s threatening your dental health. Some causes include:

  • Gum disease/periodontal disease
  • Cavities
  • Worn down crown or filling
  • Exposed tooth root
  • Cracked tooth

It may be difficult for you to determine the cause of your tooth sensitivity, so it’s imperative to visit our doctor. If the cause of your pain isn’t a threat to your health, there are treatments available to relieve your tooth sensitivity.

Tooth Sensitivity Triggers

There are various triggers for sensitive teeth which vary based on cause and severity. Some common triggers are:

  • Sensitivity to cold, such as when eating ice cream
  • Pain while eating hot foods
  • Sensitivity to sugar or candy
  • Pain or sensitivity when brushing and flossing

How It’s Treated

There is a special type of toothpaste that is designed to reduce tooth sensitivity. You can buy these over the counter at your local shop. They can help desensitize your teeth after just a few uses! Other treatments that may be recommended are:

  • Fluoride treatments – this works to reduce pain by strengthening your tooth enamel to protect your teeth. There are certain kinds of toothpaste with extra fluoride, or you may be recommended to complete in-office fluoride applications.
  • Dental bonding – in the case of an exposed tooth root, dental bonding can help. Bonding adds a layer of resin to the root to protect the exposed area.
  • Crown or filling replacement – for sensitivity caused by a worn crown or filling, simply replace the restoration to relieve tooth sensitivity.

We can help determine the root cause of your pain and help you get relief!

orthodontic treatment south jordan utUndergoing orthodontic treatment with traditional metal braces is an exciting process — you’ve chosen a reliable, tried-and-true method that promises to give you the perfect smile! After starting your treatment, you should be aware of some of the most common issues that patients experience with braces. Our provider of orthodontic treatment in South Jordan, UT, explains some common problems and how you can deal with them.

Sore Teeth

This is a common occurrence after having your braces put on, as pressure is being exerted on your teeth by the brackets and wires. It will also occur for a couple hours after an adjustment, but should subside. If you have specific tender spots, you can rinse with warm saltwater to help relieve the pain. If the pain persists, try a numbing agent such as Orajel to numb the pain, or a pain reliever such as ibuprofen. However, you should be feeling back to normal in a few hours!

Loose or Broken Bracket

Brackets can break or become loose when biting into hard foods. It’s possible for the bracket to fall off completely, regardless of how well it was affixed to your tooth. This isn’t harmful, but you will need to visit our orthodontist to have it put back on or replaced as soon as possible. Prevent broken brackets by avoiding hard, sticky, and chewy foods!

Poking Wire or Hook

Wires occasionally shift out of place and end up poking the cheek or gums. You can try to put the wire back into its original position, or apply wax to the wire to prevent it from poking you. If you are unable to fix the poking wire or it causes severe soreness, contact our orthodontist immediately.

Following these steps should help you have the best braces experience possible. If you have any of the above problems or have any questions for us, please don’t hesitate to call our office.

invisalign teen south jordan utOrthodontic treatment isn’t just for teenagers and adults — bringing your child in for an early evaluation can help prevent more invasive treatment down the road! Early orthodontic evaluations are recommended for children before the age of 7, as this is the easiest time to treat orthodontic problems before the mouth is done growing. Our specialist for Invisalign® Teen in South Jordan, UT, explains more below.

Why Early Treatment?

You might not think that early treatment is necessary, or that your child can wait until they are older to be evaluated for braces. However, orthodontic treatment is easier, faster, and more effective when your child is younger, as the palate (roof of the mouth) has not yet fused — this means it is more pliable. Additionally, treating issues early can prevent more serious dental and orthodontic problems down the road, saving you time and money.

Issues We Can Detect

Speech problems, difficulty chewing, and abnormal bite can all be detected during an early evaluation. Other common conditions include:

  • Underbite, where the upper teeth sit inside the arch of the lower teeth
  • Crowded or overlapping teeth
  • Crossbite, where the upper teeth fit behind your lower teeth
  • Buck teeth — front teeth that stick out
  • Misaligned teeth
  • Abnormal jaw or facial growth

These issues can cause more serious problems in adulthood, so it is preferable to handle them when they are easier to deal with!

Early Treatment Options

Options for bite problems, abnormal jaw growth, or misalignment include spacers, headgear, braces, and palatal expanders. Some parents put off their child’s first orthodontic visit due to cost. However, many parents frequently find that their child doesn’t need treatment at the time, or that treatment can wait until they are a bit older. You can plan ahead for any orthodontic treatment that may be necessary in the future this way and be fully informed about your child’s growth!

orthodontic treatment south jordan utAs we go into the new year, make oral health care part of your New Year’s resolution! Often, New Year’s resolutions mean dropping bad habits or getting fit, and while those are great goals, they’re only one part of the health puzzle — dental health is just as important as overall exercise and giving up junk food. It’s easy to let brushing and flossing slide over the holidays, so make a point to get back on track if that’s been the case for you and make an investment in your overall health. Our specialist for orthodontic treatment in South Jordan, UT, explains more below.

Eating Healthier

Cutting out sugary foods and drinks can improve your dental health. Sugar feeds bad bacteria and can lead to poor dental health, cavities, and gum disease. This is especially important if you have braces, as sugar or other debris can get stuck in the brackets and wires. Acidic foods can also eat away at the enamel on your teeth, which causes more serious problems, so be sure to limit them.

A Strict Regimen

Maintaining optimal oral health is possible through prevention. At the beginning of the year, commit to brushing and flossing your teeth twice daily. Bacteria constantly grows in your mouth, so cleaning your mouth at least twice a day is recommended. Committing to a daily routine means keeping plaque and tartar under control all year!

Invisalign®

Give yourself the gift of a straight smile for the new year! If you haven’t seen a new provider to begin treatment because you don’t like the look of traditional braces, you’re in luck! Treatments such as Invisalign offer a discreet option to straighten your teeth. This advanced treatment helps you get the beautiful smile you’ve always wanted. Our experts can help you decide which treatment is right for you.

invisalign teen south jordan utWith Christmas coming up, you might be seeing advertisements for plaque scrapers that you can use at home to remove tartar and stains. While it may be tempting to buy these as gifts for your friends and family, you should be aware that you can damage your teeth and gums with DIY plaque scraping. Our specialist for Invisalign® Teen in South Jordan, UT, explains more below.

Importance of Plaque Removal

Plaque causes gum disease and tooth decay over time, leading to periodontal disease and cavities. However, while plaque needs to be removed regularly, it shouldn’t be done at home – it needs to be performed by a dentist or dental hygienist. You’re probably familiar with these tools – your dentist or hygienist uses them when you visit for your regular cleaning. Metal dental scalers are used to remove plaque and tartar from the tooth surface and underneath the gum line. Your hygienist may also scale the root surface (referred to as root planing) to smooth the tooth roots and remove stains. After scraping your teeth, they will polish your teeth for a smooth, clean, stain-free surface.

DIY Plaque Scraping

Though you can buy plaque scrapers at the store or online, these are specialized medical tools that take proper training to use safely and effectively. Hygienists attend university and receive two years of training, ensuring that they know how to use dental scalers and other tools safely. Improper use can damage the delicate gum tissue, which is painful and leads to gum recession. The sharp plaque scraper can also cause injuries to your cheeks and tongue.

Another risk of DIY plaque scraping is infection. When used improperly, tartar can get pushed further under the gum line, worsening any existing gum disease or infection.

Safe Plaque Removal

If you need to remove staining, plaque, or are concerned about gum disease, simply visit our dentist for a professional cleaning. We will determine what type of cleaning you need and also address any dental issues you may have. In the meantime, make sure that you floss and brush regularly – leave plaque removal to trained professionals!

orthodontic treatment south jordan utTeeth grinding during sleep is a common problem that can cause dental issues. While many people experience symptoms such as jaw and teeth pain, some people might not even be aware that they are grinding until a bed partner notices. If you do experience symptoms, they may also include facial tenderness and difficulty sleeping. Our specialist for orthodontic treatment in South Jordan, UT, explains how a night guard may help prevent tooth damage from grinding.

Symptoms and Causes

Even if you aren’t aware that you grind your teeth, our orthodontist will be able to see evidence on the surfaces of your molars if you have long-term, consistent grinding. This habit changes the shape and texture of your teeth and can even cause broken teeth, loss of tooth enamel, and in severe cases, tooth loss. Additionally, some symptoms include:

  • Fatigue
  • Headaches upon waking
  • Sore jaw
  • Facial pain

Some causes of teeth grinding include stress and anxiety. Other causes may also be caffeine, alcohol use, cigarettes, crooked teeth, sleep apnea, snoring, an abnormal bite.

Night Guards

The majority of nighttime teeth grinding can be addressed with a night guard. Night guards are also referred to as mouth guards, dental guards, or bite splints — they simply create a barrier between your teeth to prevent damage from grinding and relieve tension in the jaw. You can purchase these over-the-counter. However, custom-made night guards have a better fit and can be more comfortable during sleep.

There are a few different ways they can be fitted, and the type that will work best for you depends on your individual needs.

Types of Night Guards

There are a few types of night guards, including:

  • Soft Night Guard — this is the most common type and is used for mild or occasional cases, not for severe teeth grinders.
  • Dual Laminate Night Guards — this is for moderate to severe teeth grinding. They are soft on the inside, hard on the outside.

Ask about night guards during your next appointment!

invisalign teen south jordan utOcclusion is the term used to describe how the upper and lower teeth align and fit together. In a healthy mouth, the upper teeth fit just over the lower teeth. When the teeth don’t align as they should, it is called malocclusion, or a bad bite. There are different classes of malocclusion, all of which can lead to orthodontic problems and dental issues. Our specialist for Invisalign® Teen in South Jordan, UT, explains the different classes below.

What Causes Malocclusion?

Malocclusion is usually caused by genetic factors. Hereditary markers can cause your jaw or teeth to grow abnormally in size or shape. However, it can also be caused by excessive thumb sucking, extra teeth, missing teeth, or jaw injury. Symptoms of malocclusion include mouth breathing, difficulty chewing and biting, speech difficulties, and jaw pain.

Classes of Malocclusion

There are 3 classes of malocclusion that define the type and severity of the misalignment.

Class 1 is the most common — the bite is normal, but the upper teeth slightly overlap the lower teeth.

Class 2 is also referred to as overbite, where the upper jaw and teeth overlap the bottom jaw and teeth.

Class 3 is known as underbite, where the lower jaw protrudes, causing the lower jaw and teeth to stick out, overlapping the upper jaw and teeth.

If malocclusion is not treated, it can lead to tooth decay, gingivitis, and other problems.

Treatments for Malocclusion

It’s critical to realign the teeth and jaws to restore proper occlusion and correct any abnormalities in facial appearance. Treatment options include:

  • Traditional metal braces, which are effective for all levels of malocclusion
  • Invisalign®, which is a great discreet option for mild to moderate cases
  • Removal of extra teeth
  • Replacing missing teeth
  • Repairing damaged teeth or restorations

In severe cases, jaw surgery or stabilization may be necessary to correct malocclusion. If this is the case for you, our orthodontist will discuss this option during your appointment.

orthodontic treatment south jordan utSome people experience discoloration of their teeth around their brackets throughout the course of treatment with traditional braces. This is a common occurrence that can lead to unevenness in tooth color after your braces are removed. Thankfully, there are steps you can take to keep your smile bright while undergoing treatment with braces, and there are also methods for correcting tooth shade after your treatment is complete! Our specialist for orthodontic treatment in South Jordan, UT, explains more here.

Why Does Staining Occur?

Discoloration can occur when food becomes stuck in between brackets and wires or when you consume foods and drinks that tend to stain. Food debris causes a buildup of bacteria and plaque, which then leads to further staining and spots on the teeth.

How To Prevent Staining

The simplest way to keep your teeth white and minimize the chance of white spots is to always brush and floss after each meal. Clean between your wires either with a tool or a water pick to ensure that all debris is removed. It’s also important to avoid foods and drinks that tend to stain the teeth, such as coffee, tea, and red wine, and reduce consumption of acidic foods and sugary drinks, which can damage your enamel.

Whitening Methods

Using whitening methods such as whitening trays or strips is not recommended while you undergo treatment with traditional metal braces. If you notice staining and want to correct it, try using a whitening toothpaste or mouthwash that is designed to gently lift tooth stains. Following your treatment, if you notice there are white spots where your brackets were, you may want to consider professional whitening treatment to even out the color of your teeth and make your smile bright! Our orthodontist will advise if professional whitening treatment is right for you.

invisalign teen south jordan utIf you’ve been wondering when your child should visit a pediatric dentist, look no further. Our orthodontist is here to provide some information on the importance of pediatric dentistry and the benefits to taking your child to their first checkup as early as possible. How can a checkup help your child? Our specialist for Invisalign Teen in South Jordan, UT, explains more below.

Early Treatment

There are many benefits to having an early evaluation. If there are any structural abnormalities in your child’s teeth or jaw, it’s critical to identify them early in order to effectively treat them. Left untreated, structural problems, tooth decay, or even teeth growing in incorrectly can cause problems down the road. Additionally, teaching children about the importance of proper dental hygiene from a young age aids in preventing tooth decay and can be beneficial for their dental health in the long run.

The First Visit

It’s important to start early to promote a positive association with visiting the orthodontist. Our staff will explain things clearly, using kid-friendly language, and make sure that your child’s first visit is calm and pleasant. Our orthodontist will welcome you and your family and make you and your child as comfortable as possible.

Types of Treatments

Some treatments are similar for children, such as treatments for tooth decay and filling cavities. However, there are some treatments that are especially important in pediatric treatment, including baby teeth and jaw growth, spacers or other orthodontic appliances, and recognizing malocclusion before it has a chance to affect the teeth and jaws permanently.
